According to the report, by 2009, the scale of the urban middle income class in China has reached 230 million, accounting for about 37% of the urban population.
The proportion of Chinese middle and low income groups is still large, and the expected "olive type" structure does not appear.

The report defines the upper and lower limits of the Engel coefficient of Chinese middle-income families in urban areas as 0.3 to 0.373.
According to the report, the average size of urban middle income class increased by 3.8% in the ten years from 2000 to 2009.
The middle income class in Beijing and Shanghai has a large scale, reaching 46% and 38% respectively, but it does not mean that the income level of the large cities is relatively high, and the scale of the middle income class is large.
The report also indicated that the proportion of Chinese middle and low income groups is still large, although the overall trend is decreasing year by year, and it is lower than 60% from 2005, but still more than 50%. The expected "olive type" structure has not appeared.
The proportion of Chinese urban high-income groups has been increasing slowly, but still no more than 10%.
However, the report predicts that from 2010 to 2025, the scale of China's urban middle income class will expand at a rate of 2.3% per year, and it will be close to 47% by 2020. It will probably exceed 50% before and after 2023. In 2019, the proportion of middle-income groups in cities may exceed the proportion of urban middle and low income groups for the first time.
