The advanced technology and project department (ATAP) published the interactive textile project named Project Jacquard last year. After a year, Google disclosed the latest development of the project.

According to ATAP department executive Ivan Poplev (Ivan Poupyrev) today announced that Google is working with famous clothing manufacturers.

Levis

To develop a smart jacket for city riders.

When connected to smart phones, wearers can control music, answer phones and navigate by clicking and sliding on the cuffs.

The partnership between Google and Levi's was reached last year, but the two companies did not disclose how Levi's would use Project Jacquard technology at that time.

The Project Jacquard project "multi touch sensor" is "woven" into clothing, making it a wearable computing device.

Google said the idea of the jacket called Commuter Trucker is to perfect the integration of fashionable clothing and practical technology.

Nowadays, it is very dangerous for a rider to check his cell phone on busy streets.

With Levi's's Commuter Trucker jacket, the rider now needs different touch controls to achieve different functions through the cuffs of the touch jacket.

Before that, they have to take out their cell phones for operation.

The jacket belongs to the Commuter clothing category of Levi's, and the target users of this kind are mainly urban residents who use bicycles.

The cuffs of the jacket integrated the appendages of Project Jacquard, which made everything possible.

This appendage can be removed and charged by USB, which is connected to the LED lamp, tactile feedback system, battery and fabric sensor in the jacket.

The connection point cleverly used the buttonhole of the cuff, which made it look less abrupt.

In addition, the platform also includes a mobile phone application that connects the jacket to the cloud.

Google emphasizes that users can use the smart jacket like traditional clothes, such as folding and washing.

"The unique challenge of creating smart clothes platforms is that fashion and technology must be integrated, but there are inherent contradictions between these two points," Pope Lev said.

"Technology is easy to damage, but clothing will not."

In addition to being able to control calls, Google maps and Play Music, Google said the jacket will interact with third party services.

For example, this means that users can also control Spotify music, or control Strava and other fitness applications.

Google will provide related application interfaces (API).

During the stage demonstration, the two companies showed off a specific work style of the jacket.

For example, fingers continuously slide up and down the cuffs to control the volume.

Another function called "Compass" needs to slide at the cuff once, and then the voice assistant will inform the user of the next meeting time and how long it will take to arrive at the meeting place.

Google said it will cooperate with other clothing companies including sports apparel companies in the future to expand the audience of Jacquard projects.

At present, Commuter Trucker is still in the demonstration stage, and Google said it will conduct beta tests this fall. The official listing will be in the autumn of 2017.
