On November 23, the second batch of 101 members of the 38th Antarctic expedition of China, dressed in the expedition uniforms made by pathfinders, embarked from Shanghai on the "Xuelong 2" polar scientific expedition icebreaker and started the Antarctic scientific expedition mission. On November 5, the first batch of 154 members of the Antarctic expedition set out on board the "Snow Dragon" polar scientific expedition icebreaker. The Antarctic expedition is expected to last more than 160 days and will return to China in mid April 2022.

The 38th Antarctic expedition will focus on global climate change, carry out scientific investigation on atmospheric composition, hydrometeorology and ecological environment, monitor new pollutants such as microplastics and sea floating garbage in the Southern Ocean, and provide wintering personnel and supplies for Zhongshan station and Great Wall Station in Antarctica.

On the eve of Xuelong 2's departure, Pathfinder group and China Polar Research Center formally signed a brand cooperation agreement in the conference room of Shanghai polar center wharf.
